HOW NEW MATERIALS IN CONTACTS CAN HELP PROTECT YOU FROM THE SUN
One thing that contact wearers have always been able to do in contrast to traditional glasses people is choose any type of sunglasses they want to when going outdoors. Sunglasses are very important to protect your vision from the ultraviolet rays put out by the sun, but options when it comes to prescription sunglasses can sometimes be rather limited. However, soon contact lens users will have even more of a leg up when it comes to custom eye protection with self tinting contacts.
These exciting new lenses will allow people to go out into the sunlight without the need for sunglasses, as the lenses themselves will act as sun protection by tinting themselves in much the same way transition lenses for eyeglasses do now. Now, not everyone will want to walk around with black eyeballs outdoors but there is a solution for that as well. New lenses are being developed that allow for the outside of the lens to still display a normal eye while the inner layer itself is the one that is being tinted to protect you from the sun. You will even be able to control this at will with a small remote, or your smart phone.
HOW NEW CONTACT TECHNOLOGY CAN BE USED IN COSMETICS
Have you ever felt to yourself that your eyes didn’t match your outfit? Well there is a contact lens solution on the horizon for that as well. New lenses are being developed that can change the color of your eyes with the push of a button. The lenses contain a small wireless receiver that allows them to find out what color you are fancying that day, and small electrodes in the lens stimulate the color change in the special LCD crystals contained within the contact lens. So while at work you can be the hard brown eyed negotiator, but switch back to your famous baby blues just in time for your dinner date that night. Changing the color of your eyes will be just as easy as changing your clothes, if not easier!
HOW NEW TECHNOLOGY WILL SOON LET YOUR CONTACTS REPLACE YOUR SMART PHONE
While sun protection and color changing eyes might be exciting, the most thrilling thing on the horizon for contact lenses is integrated displays. These special lenses developed in Belgium can display anything from text messages to GPS maps directly in front of your vision. Soon they will be able to eliminate the need for ever looking at your phones screen again. By using super thin LCD screens that can fit between the layers of a contact lens and tiny wireless receivers, these special lenses will make you feel like you just stepped off of the set of Terminator. While these types of displays have existed for awhile, they were only a concept item able to display a few pixels in a single part of the eye. These new LCD screens can cover the entire lens allowing for a much greater amount of information to be displayed. Getting a text during a movie or a meeting will no longer be a problem, as you can receive the text and read it without anyone around you ever knowing you got it. When walking somewhere in the city, you will no longer need to carry around a map with you as you can have the map right in front of your eyes at all times. When visiting a museum, why not read the Wikipedia article for the painting you are viewing in one eye, while admiring it with the other? The possibilities for the technology are truly endless.
HOW THESE NEW LCD CONTACTS CAN HELP IN THE MEDICAL FIELD
These special LCD screened contact lenses are not just for information purposes, they can also serve a great medical need in those with vision damage. Special pixels inside the lens can help control the flow of light into the eye in ways that current contact lens technology could never hope to achieve, providing much better vision relief for those suffering from degenerative eye disease. They can also adjust in an instant to the needs of the wearer, reducing the need for constant new lens prescriptions to keep up with a persons changing vision. In fact, a single pair of lenses could last you for years as when your prescription needs updated, the ophthalmologist can simply change the lenses you already have right on the spot.
With these new advances in contact lens technology on the way, many exciting things are on the horizon for those of us that wear contacts to correct our vision. Soon our eye wear might be the most technological thing we carry with us instead of our smart phones.
